Conversation as collaboration
English is saturated with combat metaphors for dialogue. We "attack" ideas, "defend" positions, "demolish" arguments, "defeat" opponents. We speak of "winning" debates as though understanding were a zero-sum game. These metaphors shape how speakers approach disagreement: as a contest where someone must prevail.
Phi's conversational structures assume a different model. Head-final grammar means listeners actively construct meaning alongside the speaker; they process context before encountering the verb that ties everything together. The evidential system encourages speakers to acknowledge the limits of their own knowledge, which opens genuine space for others to contribute. The request-centered approach emphasizes invitation over assertion.
None of this prevents disagreement. Phi speakers can and should challenge ideas. The difference is structural: the language makes it easier to say "here's what I've observed" (hi) or "here's what I've reasoned" (ke) than to make unqualified declarations. Curiosity and provisional understanding are grammatically simpler than dogmatic certainty.
When conversation operates this way, something interesting happens. Understanding can emerge that none of the participants brought to the table individually. This isn't compromise, where everyone sacrifices something. It's synthesis, where the collision of perspectives generates insight that wasn't available before. Phi can't force that outcome, but its structures make the conditions for it more natural.
