Part 5 · complex — Chapter 18 · discourse
Addition and example
These two markers support a point that's already been made: one by piling on further evidence, the other by grounding an abstraction in something concrete.
Addition: sheno
sheno signals that what follows adds to or reinforces the previous thought. It is Phi's "furthermore," "in addition," "moreover."
shelira phelora nai. sheno luphore maeli nai. forest beautiful be. ADD river quiet be. (The forest is beautiful. Furthermore the river is quiet.)
mia shea phaelo. sheno mia lothea phaelo. 1SG peace feel. ADD 1SG love feel. (I feel peace. Furthermore I feel love.)
shia welao thumela. sheno shia thesua nai. 3SG good teach. ADD 3SG mindful be. (They teach well. Furthermore they are mindful.)
Where nela (and) joins items as grammatical equals, sheno builds a rhetorical case. Each sheno sentence strengthens what came before: it layers evidence or expands a picture. The listener understands that the speaker is still building the same argument, not starting a new one.
Example: phisu
phisu signals that what follows illustrates or concretizes a preceding general statement. It is Phi's "for example," "for instance," "such as."
lo peloru phelora nai. phisu ha peloru newu nai. PL flower beautiful be. EXMP PROX flower new be. (The flowers are beautiful. For example this flower is new.)
mia lo shiro lothea. phisu mia ha whalo shiro lothea. 1SG PL tree love. EXMP 1SG PROX large tree love. (I love trees. For example I love this large tree.)
shia welao thumela. phisu shia lo lopia nua thalo. 3SG good teach. EXMP 3SG PL child COM walk. (They teach well. For example they walk with the children.)
phisu moves from abstract to concrete. It tells the listener: "that general claim I just made? here's what it looks like in practice." This grounding function is particularly valuable in Phi, where philosophical concepts benefit from specific illustration.
The difference between sheno and phisu
Both follow a general statement, but they do different things with it:
shenoadds a new point that supports the same conclusionphisuprovides a specific case of the point already made
After "they teach well":
- sheno shia thesua nai — furthermore they are mindful (a new supporting observation)
- phisu shia lo lopia nua thalo — for example they walk with the children (a concrete instance of teaching well)
The distinction is between widening the evidence and zooming into the detail.
