Part 5 · complex — Chapter 18 · discourse

Precision: rephrasing, specifying, and summarizing

The remaining three discourse markers all refine what has already been said rather than pushing the conversation in a new direction. They help a speaker clarify, focus, and distill.

Rephrasing: shorela

shorela signals that what follows restates the previous thought in different words. It is Phi's "in other words," "that is to say," "to put it another way."

shiro lo phialu pilu. shorela shiro thuroa.
tree PL water take. REPH tree grow.
(The tree takes water. In other words the tree grows.)
shia ma haolu. shorela shia maeli nai.
3SG NEG speak. REPH 3SG quiet be.
(They do not speak. In other words they are quiet.)

shorela doesn't introduce new information. It offers a second path to the same meaning: understanding sometimes requires multiple approaches. This is particularly useful when a speaker senses that their first formulation didn't land, or when a concept is complex enough to benefit from being seen from two angles.

Specifying: shekoi

shekoi signals that what follows narrows the preceding statement to a particular case or detail. It is Phi's "specifically," "in particular," "to be precise."

mia lo shiro lothea. shekoi mia ha serao shiro lothea.
1SG PL tree love. SPEC 1SG PROX old tree love.
(I love trees. Specifically I love this old tree.)
lo miona haolu. shekoi ne sa sulae haolu.
PL person speak. SPEC NAME HON.RESPECT sulae speak.
(The people speak. Specifically honored sulae speaks.)

Where phisu (for example) introduces one case among many possible illustrations, shekoi zooms in on the case that matters. "For example" says "here's one instance." "Specifically" says "here's the one I mean."

Summarizing: shelao

shelao signals that what follows distills or concludes the preceding discussion. It is Phi's "in summary," "to conclude," "in short."

sorae sulae nai. lo peloru thuroa. luphore phaelu nai. shelao shelira welao nai.
sun warm be. PL flower grow. river peaceful be. SUMM forest good be.
(The sun is warm. The flowers grow. The river is peaceful. In summary the forest is good.)
mia to theo nela to shonela. shelao mia shelomui.
1SG PST read COORD PST learn. SUMM 1SG understand.
(I read and learned. In summary I understand.)

shelao tells the listener to shift from gathering details to receiving a synthesis. Everything that came before is being condensed into a final statement. It's most useful after extended discussion, where the core point might otherwise get lost in the accumulation of supporting thoughts.

All seven occupy the same position: after Slot 0 particles, before the subject. They are road signs for the listener: they announce the shape of the thought before its content arrives.
